Scientists are remaining stubbornly silent about a lost race of giants found in burial mounds near Lake Delavan, Wisconsin, in May 1912.

The dig site at Lake Delavan was overseen by Beloit College and it included more than 200 effigy mounds that proved to be classic examples of 8th century Woodland Culture. But the enormous size of the skeletons and elongated skulls found in May 1912 did not fit very neatly into anyone's concept of a textbook standard.

They were enormous. These were not average human beings.

First reported in the 4 May 1912 issue of the New York Times, the 18 skeletons found by the Peterson brothers on Lake Lawn Farm in southwest Wisconsin exhibited several strange and freakish features.

An audio engineer has captured on tape the sound of one of the mysterious booms that have been plaguing Clintonville over the last two weeks, and the noise sounds more like an underground explosion than an earthquake.

The sound was recorded by audio engineer Brian Sullivan.

“The first night, no luck. But, Sullivan said he captured a boom from this past Saturday, one minute before 4 a.m. It’s short, but it sounds like a boom,” reports 790 KABC.

In "The Pickle" Unexplained Wisconsin: Seismometer Station Rules Out Earthquakes As Cause of Clintonville Booms

Despite official claims to the contrary, early data from a seismometer station in Wisconsin rules out earthquakes as an explanation for last night’s mysterious booms in the town of Clintonville, as residents continue to clamor for answers amidst increasing suspicion.

After the US Geological Survey explained last week’s booms by noting they had found a previously undiscovered earthquake hit the town on Tuesday (despite the fact that the booms were first reported the previous Sunday), city officials declared the situation “case closed”.

However, the booms returned again last night louder than before, with police receiving dozens of calls from concerned residents from 10:35pm onwards.

Ignoring skepticism from residents towards the ‘earthquake’ explanation, city administrator Lisa Kuss again blamed natural seismic activity during television interviews this morning, despite the fact that Wisconsin is rarely hit by earthquakes and to have two in the space of a week is unheard of.

However, with Kuss set to talk with the USGS again today, early indications suggest that last night’s booms did not correlate with any earthquake activity in the state.

“A preliminary review of seismic activity recorded at two permanent seismometer stations in Wisconsin did not indicate even a low-level earthquake at Clintonville late Tuesday, a spokesman for the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., said,” reports the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

MILWAUKEE — A minor earthquake occurred this week near the eastern Wisconsin city where researchers have been investigating a series of unexplained booming sounds, federal geologists said Thursday.The U.S. Geological Survey said the 1.5-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday just after midnight in Clintonville, a town of about 4,600 people about 40 miles west of Green Bay.
Geophysicist Paul Caruso told The Associated Press that loud booming noises have been known to accompany earthquakes. It's possible the mysterious sounds that town officials have been investigating are linked to the quake, he said.Earthquakes can generate seismic energy that moves through rock at thousands of miles per hour, producing a sonic boom when the waves come to the surface, Caruso said."To be honest, I'm skeptical that there'd be a sound report associated with such a small earthquake, but it's possible," he said.Those reservations didn't stop Clintonville City Administrator Lisa Kuss from declaring "the mystery is solved" at a news conference Thursday evening.She said USGS representatives described the event as a swarm of several small earthquakes in a very short time."In other places in the United States, a 1.5 earthquake would not be felt," she said. Mysterious booms that have rocked the town of Clintonville, Wisconsin have spread to another town 80 miles away. Police in Montello received reports of similar earth tremors at 5:30am this morning.

“They checked to see if anyone was drilling or doing underground work but came back empty handed,” reports NBC 26.“Residents from Montello say they’re not crazy! In fact, they didn’t even hear about what’s going on in Clintonville until after they started doing some research online.”
